About the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
The Ultimate Companion for the Field and Family Home
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a rare and versatile breed, cherished by hunters and families alike for its intelligence, loyalty, and gentle temperament. Originally developed in the late 1800s by Dutch breeder Eduard Korthals, the Griffon was bred to be the ultimate gundog—capable of pointing, retrieving, and tracking across varied terrain. Today, these dogs continue to thrive as all-purpose sporting dogs, as well as affectionate and devoted family companions.
With their expressive eyes, distinctive wiry coats, and comical beards, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are not only striking in appearance but also full of personality. They’re known for being eager to please, highly trainable, and deeply bonded to their people. These are dogs that want to be part of the action—whether that means hiking through the woods, pointing upland birds, or curling up at your feet after a day outside.
-
Griffons are often described as having a "happy medium" temperament: energetic but not hyper, intelligent but not stubborn, affectionate but not overly needy. They are gentle with children, typically get along well with other animals, and are happiest when included in family life. They’re alert and vocal when needed, making them decent watchdogs—but their default is friendly and social.
-
Classified as a Sporting Dog and Pointing Breed, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is sometimes affectionately called the “Supreme Gun Dog” for its natural instinct in the field. They have an excellent nose, love water, and are strong swimmers, making them ideal for both upland and waterfowl game.
They are not a kennel dog. Griffons need to be part of the family unit and do best in homes that can provide plenty of exercise, enrichment, and affection.
-
One of the breed’s standout features is its wiry, low-shedding coat, which provides protection in rough cover and chilly weather. While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, the Griffon’s coat is considered low-allergen and often suitable for families with mild allergies. Regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping help keep the coat tidy and healthy.
-
Griffons do best with active families who enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re a hunter looking for a reliable field companion or a family wanting an adventurous best friend, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a loyal, fun-loving, and trainable partner. A fenced yard, daily walks, and mental stimulation are all part of their ideal environment.
At Glenlily Acres, we raise our puppies in the heart of nature—well-socialized, handled daily by our children, and exposed to the sights and sounds of family farm life. Our goal is to match each pup with a home that understands and appreciates the unique and wonderful spirit of the Griffon.
